ABORIGINAL AFFAIRS--Treaty Day Awards Presented at Government House

Several Mi'kmaq Treaty Day awards were presented today, Nov. 26, at a special ceremony at Government House in Halifax.

Education Minister Jamie Muir, on behalf of Aboriginal Affairs Minister Michael Baker, presented Annie Tina Marshall of Chapel Island, Cape Breton, and Doug Knockwood of Indian Brook, near Shubenacadie, with Grand Chief Donald Marshall Senior Memorial Elder Awards. Recipients of this award are nominated by their community for long-time community service.

Mr. Muir also presented the Chief Noel Doucette Memorial Youth Education Awards to Zabrina Whitman of the Glooscap First Nation in the Annapolis Valley and Chance Angus Paul of Millbrook, near Truro. Both recipients were nominated for their academic standings.

The annual Treaty Day event scheduled for Oct. 1, where the awards would have been presented, was cancelled following Hurricane Juan. The awards ceremony was hosted by Lt.-Gov. Myra Freeman and was attended by Grand Chief Ben Sylliboy, Grand Kaptin Alex Denny and by families of the recipients.
