Premier Urges Nova Scotians to Remember

Premier John Hamm is urging all Nova Scotians to take a few moments on Tuesday, Nov. 11 to remember the men and women who have died or suffered in wars and conflicts and all those who have served our country in uniform.

"It is our duty as Nova Scotians and as Canadians to ensure that the sacrifices made to preserve our freedom and democracy are never forgotten," said the premier. "I hope that this Nov. 11, the people of our province will make an effort to visit a local cenotaph or to spend a few moments in thanks for the peaceful way of life we enjoy here in Nova Scotia."

Over the past number of years, the Nova Scotia government has undertaken several initiatives to support individuals who have served their country. To ensure that children value the contribution of veterans, government has made Canadian history a requirement for graduation from high school. In 2000, Highway 102 from Fall River to Truro was named the Veterans Memorial Highway. And, in February 2003, government began issuing veterans' license plates to those who have served in uniform.

"We can never repay the sacrifices that many men and women have made in order that our way of life might be protected," said Premier Hamm. "But we can remember."
