Top 4-H Members and Leaders To Attend National Conferences

AGRICULTURE/FISHERIES--Top 4-H Members and Leaders To Attend National Conferences


Ten 4-H members and eight 4-H leaders from Nova Scotia will attend two prestigious national conferences in Toronto during National 4-H Week, Nov. 5-9.

This year, the National 4-H Members Conference will feature a panel discussion on The Changing Face of Agriculture: Science, Technology and Innovation in Canadian Agriculture. It will be moderated by commentator and radio host Rex Murphy.

"The conference allows youth from across the country to meet and discuss issues and challenges pertaining to Canadian agriculture," said Chris d'Entremont, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries. "It is important to educate our youth on these important industries as the future of agriculture is dependent upon their interest and skills."

The conference is the only one of its kind in Canada. More than 60 4-H members from Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom will participate. The themes for the conference are processing, production, retail and marketing, and careers. During the conference, 4-H delegates will also participate in educational tours of various industry facilities in and around Toronto. The week culminates in the national discussion panel, which will bring together a variety of leaders from the food and agriculture industries and the science and technology sectors.

Nova Scotia recipients of the travel awards are: Marcie Russell, Barrs Corner, Lunenburg Co.; Nicole MacHattie, Middleton, Annapolis Co.; Stephanie Trueman, Canning, Kings Co.; Tyson Thompson, River John, Pictou Co.; Cory Smith, Port Howe, Cumberland Co.; Melissa Tattrie, Tatamagouche, Colchester Co.; Lauren Johnson, Brookfield, Colchester Co.; Christine Saunders, Scotsville, Inverness Co. and Genna Chisholm, of Port Hood, Inverness Co.

The National 4-H Volunteer Leaders' Conference, will run concurrently with the 4-H member conference. The theme of this year's leaders' conference is Member - The Future of Tomorrow, Leaders - Teachers of Today!
