MLAs Proud to Remember

Crimson-coloured poppies were placed on the lapels of Members of the Legislative Assembly today, Oct. 23, by members of the Royal Canadian Legion, Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command.

The presentation was an introduction to the legion's annual Remembrance Day poppy campaign which officially begins on Friday, Oct. 31.

Like thousands of other Nova Scotians, MLAs will wear the Remembrance Day poppies until Nov. 11 in memory and honour of Canadian service personnel.

"We are proud to wear these symbols in remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice and in honour of those who have served our country," said Speaker of the House Murray Scott. "It is such a small thing to do but it has such large ramifications. It shows that Nova Scotians will not forget the contributions made by these men and women."

For more than 80 years, the poppy has been the symbol of remembrance in Canada. Funds raised by legion members through the distribution of poppies in shopping malls and other public places are used to provide assistance to veterans, ex-service members and their families and to support community-based programs.

There are 119 branches of the Royal Canadian Legion in Nova Scotia. Members of the legion include veterans, serving and ex- service personnel and their immediate families, members of the RCMP, police forces and other concerned citizens.

On Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. Canadians across the country will stop and pay tribute to those who served Canada in wars and military operations.
