Nova Scotians Celebrate Public Library Week

Nova Scotians are in for a treat when they stop by one of the province's 76 public libraries during Public Library Week, Oct. 20-26.

The theme for this year's week is "Look At Us Now."

"We think many Nova Scotians will be surprised to see the wide variety of programs and services libraries have to offer," said Elizabeth Armstrong, director of the Nova Scotia Provincial Library.

Some library branches have asked local community leaders and well-known personalities to drop by and spend time checking out books or reading to the public.

Different locations will also feature activities for young people such as, Halloween parties and craft-making programs.

"Public libraries are extremely valuable community assets," said Education Minister Jamie Muir. "The staff and trustees are doing a wonderful job, and through their work, public libraries will continue to make a great contribution to the lives of Nova Scotians."

Besides the special events this week, libraries offer Nova Scotians year-round, free access to the Internet, educational and personal development courses, a wide range of DVDs, CDs, videos and books, all available to borrow at no charge.
