TRANSPORTATION/PUBLIC WORKS--Investing in Roads in Cape Breton Regional Municipality

Motorists in Cape Breton Regional Municipality will soon have smoother travels.

Two contracts, worth more than $3 million, have recently been awarded for road improvements in Cape Breton Regional Municipality.

"Better roads equal a stronger Nova Scotia," said Ron Russell, Minister of Transportation and Public Works. "Safer and more efficient roads mean improved access to goods and services in our province."

One contract, worth almost $1.5 million, is for Little Pond Road, from Route 305 to Mine Site. The project will involve repairing and repaving about 4.5 kilometres of road. The contract was awarded to Municipal Ready Mix Ltd. The work has started and is expected to be complete by Friday, Oct. 31.

The second contract involves repaving for two sections of road:
Alder Point Road, from Highway 105 to the end at Alder Point, about 6.2 kilometres; and Highway 125, near Exit 5 westerly, about 1.5 kilometres. This contract, awarded to Dexter Construction, is worth over $1.7 million. Work has started and will be complete by Friday, Oct. 31.

The Department of Transportation and Public Works highways division manages more than 23,000 kilometres of roads in Nova Scotia. It maintains an inventory of 3,800 bridges and operates seven provincial ferries. Staff provide services from district offices in Bridgewater, Bedford, Truro and Sydney.
