EMERGENCY MEASURES ORGANIZATION--EMO Issues Precautions for Wind Storm
Strong winds and heavy rains are expected in parts of Nova Scotia today, Oct. 15. The provincial Emergency Measures Organization advises the public to take precautions.
"There are still many trees weakened by hurricane Juan which could have the potential to cause damage," said Mike Lester, Executive Director of the Nova Scotia Emergency Measures Organization. "Nova Scotians should exercise care and caution during today's wind storm."
One of the most important things individuals can do is to listen for updated weather information or public safety bulletins and to act accordingly.
Nova Scotians are reminded of the following steps to prepare for weather related emergencies:
- Everyone should have an emergency kit ready at all times. This kit should include: food, a supply of water, clothing, blankets, medication, flashlight, battery powered radio, extra batteries and a first aid kit.
- Choose a shelter for you and your family. For example, a basement, storm cellar or closet beneath the stairs can provide good shelter.
- Choose a meeting place for you and your family. Identifying in advance a place to meet during any emergency can significantly reduce worry and stress. It may be easier to set up some form of communication to notify each other of whereabouts and safety.
Reduce hazards on your property. Trim dead or rotting branches and remove dead trees entirely. Secure objects that may be blown around or torn loose. Also, make sure your home is protected as much as possible from heavy rains or floods.
