Job Competition Deadline Extended

PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSION -Job Competition Deadline Extended

The Government of Nova Scotia is extending the deadline for recent and current government job competitions to help people who couldn't apply this week or who may have experienced technical difficulties applying online.

"We know that Hurricane Juan prevented many people from applying for job competitions this week," said Human Resources Minister Carolyn Bolivar-Getson. "This way, they will have a few extra days to get their applications in."

The government often receives more than 100 resumes each day for jobs advertised in its Employment Opportunities Bulletin, either mailed, hand-delivered, or sent online. Since competitions close Tuesday at midnight, most applications are received on that day.

Government offices were not open to receive applications on Monday and Tuesday, and power and phone outages affected online and fax transmissions.

The online service also experienced technical problems unrelated to the hurricane over the last two weekends, Sept. 19, 20, and 21, and Sept. 27 and 28. Some 84 online job applications were not received correctly on those days, and should be resubmitted.

The new deadline for competitions with original closing dates of Sept. 23, Sept. 30 or Oct. 7 will be midnight, Tuesday, Oct. 14.

People who submitted their applications online between Sept. 19 and Sept. 28 may call the Public Service Commission at 902-424- 7660 to verify that their applications were received. Those who need to reapply should mail, fax, or hand-deliver their applications according to specified instructions for each competition.

The Public Service Commission is working on improvements to the online job application service to accommodate an increasing volume of online applications.
