Province Observes Peace Officer Memorial Day

Flags on provincial government buildings will fly at half staff on Sunday, Sept. 28, to commemorate National Peace and Police Officers' Memorial Day.

The day was declared by the Government of Canada in 1998 to show respect for peace and police officers who often risk their lives in the line of duty, and to remember those who've been killed.

"On behalf of all Nova Scotians, I want to thank the men and women who serve our country and our province as peace officers," said Justice Minister Michael Baker. "You have very demanding, challenging careers, and we admire the contribution you make to preserving law and order in our society."

Mr. Baker said a national memorial day gives each of us an opportunity to formally express appreciation for the dedication of peace and police officers, some of whom have made the ultimate, tragic sacrifice to help keep our communities safe.

"This recognition is a fitting way to honour the men and women who have given their lives in the name of public safety. We're fortunate to be living in one of the safest provinces in Canada, and we thank those peace officers who help make it that way."
