Review of Trunk 4, Sydney to Glace Bay Highway

TRANSPORTATION/PUBLIC WORKS--Review of Trunk 4, Sydney to Glace Bay Highway

A report on an important travel corridor in Cape Breton will be presented at a public meeting in Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) today, Sept. 18.

The Department of Transportation and Public Works' study of Trunk 4 between the Mayflower Mall and Reserve Mines includes a speed zone review, accident analysis, an investigation of problem locations, and possible solutions. The report is intended as a discussion document and recommends that a series of improvements on Trunk 4 would increase the level of safety and the long-term use of the highway.

"Highway safety is a top concern of government and through this study we've identified a number of ways to improve Trunk 4," said Transportation and Public Works Minister Ron Russell. "We'll continue to work with the community toward maintaining a safe and functional highway."

Recommendations on the safety and use of Trunk 4 include sign improvements; a comprehensive enforcement program; a proposal on ways to improve access to the Kytes Hill Subdivision; and land use regulations, among others. Steps have already been taken to improve signs and speed enforcement.

The department's study includes several years of data on the use of Trunk 4 and was completed in May 2003. CBRM, Cape Breton Regional Municipal Police, and representatives of the community provided input on the study.
