Russell Named House Leader

Deputy Premier Ron Russell will continue to serve as government house leader, Premier John Hamm announced today, Aug. 12.

"Nobody knows better how the legislature works than Ron Russell," said the premier. "As our government works more closely with all MLAs to make the legislature work better for Nova Scotians, I am delighted he has agreed to play this key role."

First elected MLA for Hants West in 1978, Mr. Russell has been re-elected in 1981, 1984, 1988, 1993, 1998, 1999 and 2003. During his 25 years in public life, he has served as speaker of the legislature on three separate occasions. His cabinet portfolios have included Consumer Affairs, Health, Labour, Environment, Housing and Municipal Affairs, Transportation and Public Works, Public Service Commission, Solicitor General and chair of Treasury and Policy Board. He has served as government house leader since 1999.

The new cabinet will be sworn in on Monday, Aug. 18.
