Investing in Nova Scotia's Agri-food Industry

AGRICULTURE/FISHERIES--Investing in Nova Scotia's Agri-food Industry

The provincial government is looking for innovative ideas for new agriculture technologies.

The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries is calling for project proposals that would improve Nova Scotia's competitive position within the agri-food industry. The projects are funded by a joint federal-provincial technology-development program.

Over the past four years, the program has invested in projects that have developed new cash crops, improved storage technology for fresh cranberries, and evaluated or improved pasture systems for lamb production in Nova Scotia.

"Nova Scotia's agriculture industry contributes over $400 million to our economy," said Gordon Balser, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries. "It is important that we continue to invest in innovations to encourage the growth of this industry."

Eligible projects can receive assistance for up to 75 per cent of total project costs with a maximum of $20,000 per year. All projects must be environmentally sound and reflect the objectives of the program.

"The funding support provided through the technology development program has played a significant role in maintaining and encouraging agricultural research in Nova Scotia," said Michael Johnson, manager of programs and risk management with the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries. "This research activity will lead to new economic opportunities for the province's agri- food industry."

The program is open to individuals, partnerships, corporations, co-operatives, colleges, universities and foundations, farm organizations, commodity organizations and government agencies. Priority is given to Atlantic Canada industries and research institutions.

Applications will be accepted until 4:30 p.m., Friday, Aug. 15 at the Programs and Business Risk Management office, 176 College Rd., Box 550, Truro, N.S., B2N 2P2. For more information call 902-893-6510 or visit the Web site at www.gov.ns.ca/nsaf/prm .
