HEALTH PROMOTION--All Women Competition Successful Despite Weather

Thirty-seven competitors braved the cold and rain to participate in the 6th annual Nova Scotia All Women Lifesaving Competition on July 15 at Rissers Beach, Lunenburg Co. The Western Province Hammerheads, the host club, were victorious for the second time in three years.

The competition, founded in 1998, became part of the Nova Scotia Surf League schedule in 2001. Although the format has changed somewhat, the event focus has remained the same -- to give women an opportunity to compete and to help foster the development of female lifesavers.

Rookie Maggie Arenburg was an integral part of the Hammerheads' win earning 43 points, the highest among all competitors. The Hammerheads also had sound performances from Ashley Aucoin, Carolyn Reardon, Margo MacGregor and captain Liz Bishara.

This win moved the Hammerheads ahead of the Central Province Makos into the top spot in the overall league standings. With two rounds remaining, the league championship is anyone's title. Only 106 points separate the top three clubs.

In second place was the Cape Breton Threshers who narrowed the points gap at the women's competition. The Threshers sit in fourth place but pulled closer to the rest of the field and have positioned themselves to remain in contention for the league title. Top Cape Breton performers were Carol Ann MacEachern, Maggie MacCormick and Dinao MacCormick.

The fourth round of the Nova Scotia Surf League competitions will take place July 29th on Inverness Beach, Inverness Co.
