Tribute to Johnny Miles

Premier John Hamm paid tribute to Nova Scotia marathon runner Johnny Miles.

"Johnny Miles brought international attention to Nova Scotia," said the premier. "We will always remember with pride his athletic achievements at the Boston marathon and numerous other competitions, as well as his success in business and accomplishments in life."

The Sydney Mines native was a two-time winner of the Boston marathon, securing victories in 1926 and 1929. His first win, in which he set what was then a world record for time, surprised the world. In addition to his two Olympic appearances, Mr. Miles won a bronze medal at the Empire Games in 1930. He was a member of the Nova Scotia and Canadian sport halls of fame and was a member of the Order of Canada.

"On behalf of all Nova Scotians, I would like to express deepest sympathies to his family and friends on this sad occasion," said the premier.

Johnny Miles passed away on June 14 in Hamilton, Ont. at the age of 97.
