Renovation for North River Elementary

North River Elementary School in Colchester County is getting a $2.85-million renovation.

The work is part of a series of multi-year investments to improve and build schools for Nova Scotia's students.

"This renovation will bring new life to North River Elementary so it can serve this community's students well into the future," said MLA Bill Langille on behalf of Education Minister Angus MacIsaac. "It's part of our commitment to safe, healthy learning environments where our children can grow and succeed."

The school will get a new gym, library and music room. Washrooms will be renovated and wiring for classroom technology will also be enhanced. Work will begin in 2004-05 and be completed by 2010- 11.

"I'm very pleased for the community of North River," said Mark Lavers, member of the Chignecto Central Regional School Board. "The school advisory council and the community at large have lobbied for a number of years for improvements to their school and the announced funding will most certainly address the concerns."

School boards submit their priorities for new schools and renovations to the Department of Education. The department asks a capital construction committee to review the board priorities in order to develop a provincial priority list. The committee includes representatives from the Nova Scotia School Boards Association and the departments of Education, Finance, and Transportation and Public Works.
