SENIOR CITIZENS' SECRETARIAT--Annual Seniors' Expo Planned for June 13-14

Seniors will have the chance to display their talents, have their antiques appraised or simply learn more about new and exciting services available to them during the 14th annual 50+ Expo.

The 50+ Expo will run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m on Friday, June 13 and Saturday, June 14. The ticket price for the event is $5 per day and tickets can only be purchased at the door. This event is a project of the Seniors Citizens' Secretariat and is sponsored by The Chronicle-Herald and the Medical Society of Nova Scotia.

"The 50+ Expo is an annual event designed to offer seniors the opportunity to learn more about being a senior today," said Jane Purves, chair of the Senior Citizens' Secretariat. "It is the perfect opportunity to promote awareness regarding the initiatives, programs and special events available to our seniors."

One hundred booths will offer current information about hobbies, volunteer opportunities, travel, health and other educational information. The main stage will host a variety of speakers, musicians and entertainers. Some of the entertainment will include a tribute to Don Messer's Jubilee.

Attendees will enjoy grocer Pete Luckett's humour and knowledge of produce while professional flower arranger, Neville MacKay is sure to dazzle everyone with his advice and beautiful flowers.

New to this year's expo is the Amateur 50+ Star Search. Seniors will have a chance to compete for prizes and recognition in four different categories. Sponsored by Scotiabank, there is a $2,500 grand prize.

Also new this year, is Antiques Appraisal Days. For $25, seniors will have the opportunity to have three of their possessions appraised. Suggested items include paintings, silver, ceramics, dolls, figurines and furniture.

The expo is a non-profit event planned and organized by a volunteer committee of seniors.

"This event would not be possible without the hard-work and dedication of volunteers," said Valerie White, executive director of the secretariat. "They dedicate so much of their time and energy to ensure that their peers have access to the most current information."

The Senior Citizens' Secretariat is a government agency that acts as a liaison between seniors, organizations and government.
