EDUCATION- Two Schools in Tri-County District School Board To Receive Major Renovations

Students at two schools in the Tri-County District School Board will enjoy more space at their schools.

The province will invest a total of $6.4 million in major renovations at Port Maitland Consolidated School and Yarmouth Consolidated Memorial High School.

The renovations are part of a series of multi-year investments to improve and build schools for Nova Scotia's students. MLA Richard Hurlburt made the announcement today, June 10, on behalf of Education Minister Angus MacIsaac.

Port Maitland Consolidated School will undergo a major expansion. The $2.75 million project will see a gym, music room and cafeteria added to the school. This will replace two portable classrooms now in use. The school's interior will also undergo extensive renovations. Work at Port Maitland Consolidated will begin in the 2003-04 school year and will be completed by 2005- 06.

Mr. Hurlburt also announced that Yarmouth Consolidated Memorial High School will have a new classroom wing added, the cafeteria renovated and its roof replaced. There will also be electrical, plumbing and many other upgrades. The total cost for the work at Yarmouth Memorial High School will be $3.65 million. Work on the projects will begin in the 2004-05 school year and be completed in 2008-09.

"These projects are important," said Mr. Hurlburt. "Not only do they represent the priorities of the school board but they're in the best interests of the students and staff who learn and work in the buildings."

Nancy Whittaker, chair of the Tri-County District School Board said the board identified Port Maitland Consolidated School and Yarmouth Consolidated Memorial High School as high priorities for major additions and alterations for the district.

"We are pleased to see the government take this action to address these priorities and provide better facilities for our students, parents, staff, and school communities." said Ms. Whittaker. "We would like to thank the government for recognizing the educational needs of these two communities."

Other projects already underway in this district include renovations to New Germany Rural High School in New Germany and Park View Education Centre in Bridgewater.

School boards submit their priorities for new schools and renovations to the Department of Education. The department asks a capital construction committee to review the board priorities in order to develop a provincial priority list. The committee includes representatives from the Nova Scotia School Boards Association and the departments of Education, Finance, and Transportation and Public Works.
