Safe Graduation Celebration Tips

Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation

The Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation (NSLC) has practical advice for high school students and their parents on how to keep prom and graduation festivities safe.

The safety tips provide students and their parents with advice on celebrating safely, especially where minors are involved. They encourage students to be prepared and to protect themselves when there may be alcohol consumption. Parents are encouraged to talk to their kids about celebrating safely and being responsible.

The safety tips are available on the NSLC Web site at www.nsliquor.ns.ca .

"Our store staff are very diligent in preventing sales to minors and it's a year-round priority the NSLC takes very seriously," said NSLC president Andy Barker. "Store employees are especially alert during graduation season, watching for minors attempting to purchase alcohol."

To emphasize the importance of Safe Grad activities, the liquor corporation will also be issuing print, radio and cable TV advertisements provincewide in the weeks preceding graduation activities at provincial high schools.

In 2002-03, NSLC staff requested identification from more than 270,000 individuals and refused service to more than 16,000 for failing to produce valid proof of age or for appearing to be intoxicated.
