ENERGY--Heritage Gas Bringing Natural Gas to Nova Scotians Later This Year

Nova Scotia Premier John Hamm welcomed the news today, June 3, that Heritage Gas has accepted the natural gas franchise and has outlined its plans for the months ahead.

"With today's announcement, we're one step closer to making natural gas distribution a reality for Nova Scotians," said Premier Hamm. "We are keeping our commitment to the people of this province and continuing our efforts to build a world class energy sector here in Nova Scotia."

The Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board awarded the 25-year franchise to Heritage Gas on Feb. 7. The decision was approved by cabinet on Feb. 21. Heritage Gas plans to spend $120 million in the first six years of development and expects to bring natural gas to 20,000 homeowners and 6,500 businesses in Nova Scotia.

"Over the next six years, thousands of Nova Scotians will have the opportunity to make natural gas their energy choice," said Energy Minister Ernest Fage. "That wasn't even considered a decade ago."

Heritage Gas is made up of SaskEnergy, Scotia Investments and AltaGas.

Work is expected to begin immediately in the Burnside area. The company will develop gas distribution systems in Cumberland County, Colchester County, Pictou, East Hants, Halifax Regional Municipality and Goldboro.
