TRANSPORTATION/PUBLIC WORKS--Road, Bridge Work to Take Place in Antigonish County
The province is spending nearly $2 million to upgrade a section of Highway 104 this year in Antigonish County.
Almost seven kilometres of Highway 104 in Antigonish County will be upgraded this year, along with repairs to the James River Bridge.
"This is an important project that underscores the work being done on our provincial roads and bridges this summer," said Michael Baker, Minister of Transportation and Public Works. "It improves public safety and meets the economic and social needs of our province."
The work is divided into three sections on Highway 104: from the Beaver Meadow overpass (Exit 30) easterly towards Antigonish, 4.8 kilometres; from the West River Bridge west, about 1.85 kilometres; and repairs to the James River Bridge.
Dexter Construction Ltd. was awarded the contract to complete the work. It is expected to be finished by Aug. 31.
The Department of Transportation and Public Works highways division manages more than 23,000 kilometres of roads in Nova Scotia. It maintains an inventory of 3,800 bridges and operates seven provincial ferries. Staff provide services from four district offices located in Bridgewater, Bedford, Truro and Sydney.
