ENVIRONMENT/LABOUR--Youth Conservation Corps Announces Summer Hiring
Fifty-nine summer jobs are being created across the province through the Nova Scotia Youth Conservation Corps (NSYCC), Environment and Labour Minister Ron Russell announced today, May 20.
This is the fourteenth year that the youth corps has offered environment-related summer jobs for young people. "Many Nova Scotians have entered careers like solid waste management and environmental education because of their NSYCC experience," Mr. Russell said.
The summer work program is open to Nova Scotia residents between the ages of 17 and 24. Applicants must be able to work outdoors and have an interest in the environment. Applications for the positions must be received by May 30. The jobs run from June 30 to Aug. 22.
The youth corp works will be involved in 30 NSYCC projects this year, including stream and river restoration, waste audits and pollution prevention.
"I am especially pleased with the community partnership aspect of the program," Mr. Russell said. Community partners can be businesses, community groups, government agencies, industries, institutions or environmental organizations. The partners share the cost of the project.
Applications are available provincewide at Access Nova Scotia centres; Human Resources Development Canada employment centres; high school, university and community college employment centres and the Youth Conservation Corps Web site at www.gov.ns.ca/enla/ess/ycc .
