New Management for Steam Mill Grain Centre

The Steam Mill grain handling facilities will continue to provide Nova Scotia's farmers with a place to store, clean and handle their grain thanks to new management, announced Gordon Balser, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries.

Smith Brokerage Limited has entered into a commercial lease with the department's Nova Scotia Farm Loan Board to operate the storage facilities over the next year.

"This new opportunity should alleviate some of the farmers' concerns as they enter the planting and growing season. The change in management will provide the farming community with continued access to the facilities," said Mr. Balser.

Smith Brokerage Limited is an Atlantic Canadian company and a division of Parrish & Heimbecker, Limited. It has been involved in the agricultural industry for more than 100 years and offers contracting programs for grains, oilseeds and special crops.

"We have been working with the Smith Brokerage Limited and farmers to come up with a solution over the past year and believe that the lease arrangement will provide continued and future benefits for agriculture," said Leo Cox, chair of the Nova Scotia Farm Loan Board.

The Steam Mill grain handling facilities are located at Steam Mill, Kings Co. Farmers are asked to contact Smith Brokerage Limited at 506-633-7575 for further information.
