ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT--Progress Report Proves Growth Strategy Working

Two years after releasing its 10-year economic growth strategy, the provincial government says the strategy is on track and producing results.

Economic Development Minister Cecil Clarke tabled a progress report on the strategy, Opportunities for Prosperity, in the legislature today, May 15. He said Nova Scotia is well on its way to becoming the best place in Canada to live, work, do business and raise families.

"Since launching our growth strategy, we've balanced two budgets, reduced taxes, and made important investments in our workforce and infrastructure," said Mr. Clarke. "The results speak for themselves. We're now sharing in the highest levels of economic activity in the country, we've set record employment numbers, and we're watching businesses take root and expand right across the province."

Highlights of the report include major investments in roads, municipal infrastructure, schools, adult learning and community access to high-speed internet. The document also outlines initiatives that have been put in place to help small businesses to start and grow, to attract skilled immigrants to the province and improve the skills of Nova Scotia workers.

"These investments reveal a more competitive Nova Scotia as a place to start and grow business and enjoy a healthy quality of life," Mr. Clarke told the legislature.

Opportunities for Prosperity commits the government to follow management measures that improve the business climate. It features seven strategic directions that promote higher growth in vital foundation industries and targeted new-economy sectors.

Opportunities for Prosperity: A Progress Report renews the commitment.

"With momentum on our side," said Mr. Clarke, "we will continue to follow our blueprint for economic growth -- targeted investment in key growth sectors, pragmatic budgetary and fiscal management, and a more competitive tax environment -- to ensure that Nova Scotia remains an economic leader in Canada."

Mr. Clarke is currently conducting a tour of business and community-development groups across the province to deliver the report.
