More Nova Scotians Working Than Ever Before

Nova Scotia's economy continues to grow, creating thousands of more jobs for Nova Scotians.

The latest employment report from Statistics Canada, released today, May 9, show the total number of Nova Scotians employed for the month of April 2003 at 439,000. That's an increase of 2,700 jobs over the last month and 29,900 jobs since July 1999. It's also the sixth time in 18 months that Nova Scotia has set a new record for jobs.

"Our plan for a more prosperous Nova Scotia continues to work, with more Nova Scotians earning a living and providing for their families than at any time in our history," said the premier. "Nova Scotia employers and employees should be applauded for again showing faith in the future of our province."

The premier noted that over 90 per cent of the new jobs created since the summer of 1999 are full-time. He added government must continue to take steps to share Nova Scotia's prosperity in every part of the province. On Monday, May 12, the premier and Economic Development Minister Cecil Clarke will kick-off a forum on community development in Truro, as government updates its economic growth strategy, Opportunities for Prosperity.

"While Nova Scotia's economy is stronger than ever before, we must do more to ensure that every Nova Scotian shares in this success, whether they live in Coldbrook, Cole Harbour or Chester," said the premier. "We must lower taxes for working families and find new and better ways to help our small businesses get the support they need to grow and create more jobs."
