Mixed Use Development Planned for Waterfront
WATERFRONT DEVELOPMENT CORP.--Mixed Use Development Planned for Waterfront
Waterfront Development Corporation Limited announced today, April 29, that it has selected three private-sector developers to submit detailed proposals for construction of a new residential- commercial development on the Halifax waterfront.
The mixed-use development will be located on a 3.5-acre site at the southeast corner of Lower Water and Salter Street. The site includes a water lot of about half an acre.
The developers -- Centennial Hotels Limited, Southwest Properties and Westwood Developments Limited -- will now be asked to prepare a detailed proposal elaborating on the design, development mix and financial plans for each of their proposals.
The selection of the three proponents concludes stage one of the development process. Stage two involves the detailed plans and a rigorous selection process. The successful proponent will then be invited to begin negotiations leading to a comprehensive plan and development design for the site.
Selection of the private sector developer is expected to be complete by late fall, with a final development agreement in place by the end of the year.
Waterfront Development Corporation Limited is a provincial Crown corporation with a history of revitalizing the waterfronts of Halifax Harbour.
The development of the Salter Street block follows the guidelines in the Halifax Waterfront Open Space and Development Plan, which allows mixed-use development including ground floor retail incorporated with residential and/or commercial space.
A crucial aspect of this development is the requirement that the development incorporate continuous public access to the water's edge and significant public space.
