Premier Hamm proclaims Stay Alert...Stay Safe Month

PREMIER'S OFFICE--Premier Hamm proclaims Stay Alert...Stay Safe Month

Premier John Hamm has officially proclaimed the month of April as Stay Alert...Stay Safe Month in the province of Nova Scotia.

"Educating our children on ways to stay safe is very important to members of our government and many Nova Scotians," said Premier Hamm. "Stay Alert...Stay Safe Month encourages our families and communities to practice ways to keep our children safe each day of the year."

The Stay Alert...Stay Safe program began in 1987 after the abduction and murder of an 11-year-old girl. The program emphasizes that children's safety is everyone's responsibility, including parents, teachers, community members and children themselves.

The theme of this year's event, "Role-play a Tip a Day," encourages children and adults to talk about potentially dangerous situations and ways to respond to these circumstances. Education materials provided by the Stay Alert...Stay Safe program give children the tools to gain confidence and stay safe.

"I am pleased to be joining Bert and Gert, the Alert Twins, and Canada in celebrating this national event," said Premier Hamm. "I encourage Nova Scotians to educate our young people about the skills of staying alert and safe, year-round."
