Stronger Economy Will Be This Spring's Focus
More economic growth will be the focus of the spring session of the legislature, Premier John Hamm announced today, March 26.
The legislature will resume tomorrow, March 27, with a speech from the throne. The premier said the speech will set out the government's action plan for the rest of its mandate and provide the long-term vision for the years ahead.
"Nova Scotia is a stronger, prouder, better place than it was less than four short years ago," said Premier Hamm. "Much has been accomplished -- but more needs to be done."
In addition to Nova Scotia's second straight balanced budget, the spring session will see the following actions taken to strengthen the province's economy:
- lower taxes for working families;
- significant investments in universities and the Nova Scotia Community College; and
- legislation to expand training options under the Apprenticeship Act.
"Lower taxes and a skilled workforce will be two Nova Scotia advantages that other places will find tough to beat," said the premier. Earlier this month, the Conference Board of Canada said the government's plan for lower taxes will help keep the province's economy growing.
There will also be legislation to help those who provide care and protection to others. The premier said that other measures this spring will be taken to implement Your Health Matters, Nova Scotia's plan for better health care.
"It will mean more doctors and nurses. Shorter wait lists. More support for seniors and our communities," said the premier.
