Minister Responds to Arbitration Panel Decision

The arbitration panel's decision on P to 12 teachers, released today, March 21, is good news for students and parents, said Education Minister Angus MacIsaac.

"We are pleased that the negotiations have concluded without any disruption for students and teachers in the classroom," said Mr. MacIsaac.

"While we believe that our offer was fair and reasonable for the teachers, we do respect the panel's attempt to balance the interest of both parties with its decision," said the minister. "Concluding the process that's been underway for some time now, will bring stability within the education system to enable teachers and students to focus on teaching and learning."

The arbitration panel award will see teachers get a 12 per cent increase over 43 months.

The teachers and the minister agreed to go to arbitration to settle salary and the contract term. All other outstanding issues were addressed as part of the collective bargaining process which started in late fall of 2001.

Milton Veniot was chair of the arbitration panel. Arbitration took place on Feb. 26.
