Nova Scotia Sets Another Job Record

More Nova Scotians are working than ever before, said Premier John Hamm today, March 7.

According to the latest report from Statistics Canada, more than 435,000 Nova Scotians were employed during the month of February. This is an increase of more than 1,000 people compared to the previous month, and 12,000 compared to the same time last year. Since July 1999, more than 26,000 new jobs have been created, the vast majority being full time.

"By building a climate for more growth and more jobs, our growth strategy has helped to make a real difference in the lives of Nova Scotians," said the premier. "It's clear our government must continue to strengthen our economy through sound fiscal management, investing in infrastructure and providing lower taxes for working families."

Since the release of Opportunities for Prosperity -- Nova Scotia's growth strategy -- in the fall of 2000, the province has set new employment records on four different occasions.

"Nova Scotia businesses are proving they can succeed and grow alongside the best in the world, despite economic uncertainty elsewhere," said the premier. "I would like to congratulate employers and employees for showing their faith in Nova Scotia."
