Nova Scotia Museum

Seeking something new and exciting for March break? Museums across Nova Scotia are offering fun for children of all ages. Cure any case of March break boredom with new and unique programs like Pony Magic, Adventure Africa and Treasure Trove.

Put on your safari gear and head to the Museum of Natural History in Halifax to be transported to the many natural habitats of Africa. See live animals native to the jungle, desert and plains of Africa, including the world's largest land snails, lemurs and more. Learn how Nova Scotia and Morocco were once attached, and don't miss the exciting performances by Neptune Theatre School and a variety of entertainers and storytellers.

Ahoy! Make like a pirate and get on board for a March break experience you'll treasure at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in Halifax. Join the museum's own Captain Bartholomew Hooke on a hunt for treasure through the museum galleries. Help with a simulated underwater excavation in the Shipwreck Treasures exhibit. Dig for the identity of some peculiar and puzzling objects from the museum's collection or join in on a variety of other fun activities which help explain why the sea "gets in our blood."

Horse around at the Museum of Industry in Stellarton with the Pony Magic event. Meet miniature horses, Shetland ponies and a true pit pony. Watch a blacksmith at work or get crafty yourself and paint a wooden horse. Find out how horses really arrived on Sable Island and how they survived on this remote strip of land. Discover the important role of ponies in Nova Scotia's mining heritage.

Have a sweet time during the taffy pull and other events at Ross Farm Museum in New Ross. Throughout March break you can try your hand at traditional skills and crafts. Try writing with a quill pen, working with straw, or sample home-made ice cream in crooked Rosebank Cottage. Make a wooden spin top or bird feeder in the farm workshop. Did you know Ross Farm is home to many rare heritage breeds of animals? Help feed the baby animals and learn how they are cared for, or enjoy a nature walk and talk on trails around the farm. This March break, take a hands-on adventure in rural 1800s living at Ross Farm Museum.

Want to get the dirt on fossils? If so, Fundy Geological Museum in Parrsboro is the place for you. Dino-darlings are invited to bring their favourite dinosaurs to the museum for games and a movie. Creative types can express their creativity in the Lego competition. Rockhounds can learn how to examine minerals under a microscope and how to properly care for their collection.

If you're out of school and looking for things to do, museums are for you. Get all fired-up at the Firefighters' Museum of Nova Scotia in Yarmouth or explore our seafaring heritage at the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic in Lunenburg.

For an outdoor adventure, get bundled up to explore the seven trails at Uniacke Estate Museum Park in Mount Uniacke. Although the historic home is closed for the winter season, you're welcome to bring your hiking boots, snowshoes or cross-country skis and hit the trails to wonder and wander in the winter woodland.

These are only a few of the many ways to spend days away from school. Pick up a Nova Scotia Museum pass -- your ticket to access these many experiences -- at any provincial museum. For details on fun-filled programs and exciting activities get your copy of the museum's events guide at any Nova Scotia Museum site or visit the Web site at museum.gov.ns.ca .
