Tokyo Comes to Halifax
Nova Scotia's reputation as a world leader in recycling has captured the attention of yet another city. Three solid waste experts from Tokyo, Japan, will be in the province from Wednesday to Friday, March 5 to 7.
The Tokyo delegation represents the Environmental Research Institute Inc., a private organization that supports citizen group activities as well as legal cases concerning waste management and pollution.
"Ever since the province cut its waste going to landfill by 50 per cent in 2000, experts from around the world have been seeking us out to learn from our example," said Environment and Labour Minister Ron Russell. "I think we have some valuable lessons to share on how citizen and government collaboration can achieve great environmental success."
The Tokyo group will visit composting, recycling, and solid waste facilities in Halifax and Colchester counties beginning Wednesday afternoon.
This isn't the first group to visit Nova Scotia to learn about our model for solid waste management. In the last few years, Nova Scotia has hosted other groups from Asia as well as Russia, Ireland, New Zealand, Germany, the United States, and Denmark.
