EDUCATION--Sir John A. Macdonald Remediation Completed - Minister Committed to Entire Project
With the remediation phase of the project at Sir John A. Macdonald High School concluding this week, Education Minister Angus MacIsaac is reassuring the school community that the entire renovation and upgrade project will be completed as promised.
"Our government is fully committed to completing Sir John A. and I'm pleased that students and staff will be back home in a healthy school following the March break," said Mr. MacIsaac. "All health and safety concerns at the site have been successfully addressed thanks to the tremendous efforts of everyone involved."
The minister is also assuring that the Department of Education will continue to work with the board and community, through the school's steering team, to ensure any changes are reviewed and properly communicated.
"We'll continue to work with the steering team to ensure that we build the school we all envisioned from the start," said Mr. MacIsaac.
The multi-phased project is expected to be completed over the next three years and includes a new gymnasium, cafeteria/auditorium, a new classroom wing and larger classrooms.
"The Sir John A. Macdonald School Advisory Council (SAC) is very satisfied with the first phase of our renovation to remedy health and safety issues," said Sarah Nightingale, SAC chair. "We believe the government will continue to fulfil its commitment that was announced in 2002 to provide this community with a high school that will match the standards of any new school. The process has been working and we are very happy to be going home on March 19."
The minister thanked Sackville High School for sharing space with Sir John A. since the school year began.
"Sackville High School students and staff have been very patient and welcoming," said Mr. MacIsaac. "We've seen a wonderful neighbourly effort on their part, but I know they look forward to returning to a normal schedule in their own school in March."
