Minister Welcomes Icelandair Decision

Economic Development Minister Cecil Clarke is applauding the Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) decision released today, Feb. 14, that approved Icelandair's request to include Halifax in its cargo run between New York and Keflavik.

Mr. Clarke, who hosted a trade delegation from Iceland this week, had raised air access with the country's industry minister. He had also written Canada's Minister of Transport, David Collenette, earlier in the year, on air access issues of importance to Nova Scotia.

"I firmly believe Nova Scotians will see many concrete advantages from this extra gateway for their products and expertise to and from markets in Iceland and Europe. The direct benefits for Nova Scotia are the reason I have actively supported Icelandair's bid," he said.

Nova Scotia Transportation Minister Michael Baker said he believes the CTA made a sound decision that recognized the long and beneficial relationship Nova Scotia business has built up with Icelandair. "This is a step in the right direction. We will continue to push for improved air access to and from Nova Scotia, and look for ways to use air travel to improve economic opportunities in the province," he said.

The Canadian Transportation Agency advised the province of its decision earlier today. A written decision is expected within two weeks.
