Athletes to Carry Canada Games Torch
Nova Scotia athletes going to the 2003 Canada Winter Games will get an extra workout as they run in the torch relay in Sydney today, Jan. 31, and in Halifax on Saturday, Feb. 1.
"The Games are just three weeks away, and our young athletes are ready to compete with the best from across the country," said Rodney MacDonald, Minister of Health Promotion. "I encourage all Nova Scotians to come out and cheer on our athletes as they proudly carry the Canada Games torch."
The torch relay began in Ottawa on Jan. 27. Stops are planned for Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island and Quebec, in communities that have previously hosted the Canada Games. A more extensive tour is planned for New Brunswick, which will host the Games from Feb. 22 to March 8.
Team Nova Scotia will compete in 18 of the 21 sports represented during the two weeks of the Games. The team has 284 athletes, coaches, managers and mission staff.
"Being part of Team Nova Scotia is a real honour and dream come true for my teammates and me," said Claire Latremouille of Dartmouth, a Team Nova Scotia synchronized swimmer. "We're all really excited about competing in the Games and looking forward to meeting athletes from across the country."
Runners in the Halifax leg of the torch relay are:

- Curtis White, Georges River, Cape Breton Co., boxing
Members of the Cape Breton Running Club will accompany the athletes in Sydney.
The torch relay is sponsored by Canadian Heritage, Kent and J.D. Irving, Limited.

- leave Dartmouth Sportsplex, 110 Wyse Rd., Dartmouth
- proceed over pedestrian lane of Angus L. Macdonald Bridge to Halifax and along Brunswick Street
- turn left onto Spring Garden Road
- turn left onto Barrington Street
- turn right onto George Street
- turn right onto Hollis Street and proceed to Province House, 1726 Hollis St., for ceremony
- leave Province House proceeding south on Hollis Street
- turn right onto Salter Street
- turn left onto Barrington Street
- turn right onto Spring Garden Road
- turn right onto Queen Street
- proceed to Sackville Street and up Citadel Hill
- proceed down Citadel Hill to intersection at Rainnie Drive
- cross Trollope Street and proceed to the Canada Games Pavilion on the Halifax Commons.
