Winter Fire Safety Tips

Nova Scotians are being urged to think about safety first while they try to stay warm this winter.

"During this time of year there are extra fire hazards," said provincial fire marshal Robert Cormier. "I want to urge Nova Scotians to take extra safety precautions during this winter season by identifying and dealing with these hazards."

The fire marshal offers these winter fire safety tips:

Exits/Hydrants:

  • Clear all exits and escape routes of snow and ice.
  • Ensure fire hydrants are cleared.

Portable space heaters:

  • Keep portable space heaters at least one metre (three feet) away from walls and anything else that can burn.
  • Check the cord before plugging in a heater. If it is faulty, replace it.
  • Never use an extension cord with portable heaters.
  • Keep heaters out of high-traffic areas.
  • Disconnect your portable space heater when leaving your room or apartment.

Fireplaces:

  • Make sure your chimney is cleaned periodically.
  • Have a fire screen to catch sparks.

During Power Outages:

  • Place candles at least one metre (three feet) away from combustibles. Make sure they won't tip by placing them in stable holders on a flat surface. Never leave a candle unattended.
  • Do not use a barbecue inside.
  • Portable fuel-fired heaters, charcoal grills, and gas lanterns need ventilation when used indoors. Before operating these appliances, make sure gases are vented outdoors. Keep a window partially open or install a mechanical ventilation unit.

Sprinklers:

  • Keep your room temperature at a level to prevent freezing of sprinkler pipes.

Vents:

  • Check all ductwork, heating vents and registers. Dust and other combustibles can collect on your heating elements in the summer months.
