The province has named a new CEO for its Sydney Tar Ponds Agency.
David Darrow, an engineer with years of senior management experience, will replace Bob Fowler as CEO effective Feb. 10. Mr. Fowler is leaving the agency to become Atlantic regional director general for Health Canada.
In making the announcement today, Jan. 24, Transportation and Public Works Minister Michael Baker said Mr. Darrow will be a valuable addition to the team and the project. "Mr. Darrow brings seasoned leadership skills to the agency, and he complements an already strong team."
For the last seven years, Mr. Darrow has been executive director of municipal services in what is now Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. He has also been actively involved in research and engineering studies relating to municipal pollution control throughout the province, including extensive work in the Sydney area.
Mr. Darrow has a master of science degree in civil engineering.
"This job presents me with a unique opportunity to help solve a large environmental problem," Mr. Darrow said. "I look forward to working with the rest of the agency staff and the community to complete the project."
Mr. Baker also paid tribute to the work of Mr. Fowler. "The agency has taken huge steps under Bob Fowler's direction," he said. "We will miss him, and wish him well."
The Sydney Tar Ponds Agency, manages the province's involvement in the project. The agency works with the federal and municipal governments and the Joint Action Group to co-ordinate and implement activities associated with the Tar Ponds and the Coke Ovens site.
