Ministers Committed to Port of Halifax Competitiveness
TRANSPORTATION/PUBLIC WORKS--Ministers Committed to Port of Halifax Competitiveness
Transportation and Public Works Minister Michael Baker and Economic Development Minister Cecil Clarke today emphasized the importance of the Port of Halifax to the economic well-being of the province. The ministers said they are committed to working with stakeholders to address issues and opportunities affecting the port's growth.
"Rail service is an integral component of the port's competitiveness," said Mr. Baker. "Through the leadership of the Halifax Port Authority's Smart Port initiative, we have been working with marine terminal operators, container line customers, port labour, CN, truckers and other stakeholders to strengthen our competitiveness vis-à-vis U.S. ports."
The province and Canadian National have also enjoyed a long, productive and fruitful relationship in advancing common interests.
"The province of Nova Scotia has had a long-standing interest in, and has been a catalyst behind, container port development in Halifax, including the development of both terminals, the introduction of double-stack rail service, and the Maersk-Sealand terminal bid," said Mr. Clarke.
He said that the province remains committed to being at the table to ensure the Port of Halifax and Nova Scotia maximize their significant potential.
