Toonies for Turkeys a Success
The Toonies for Turkeys campaign has raised over $7,600 to help families in need this holiday season.
Education Minister Jane Purves, representing Premier John Hamm, was joined by Opposition leader Darrell Dexter and Liberal leader Danny Graham at Province House today, Dec. 11, for the wrap-up of the Toonies for Turkeys campaign.
"I would like to thank everyone who so generously supported Toonies for Turkeys," said Ms. Purves. "The holidays are a season of giving and Toonies for Turkeys was a way for everyone at the legislature to get into the spirit this holiday season."
"I am extremely pleased with the success of Toonies for Turkeys," said Opposition leader Darrell Dexter. "Through this campaign, Nova Scotians once again demonstrated the kindness and generosity for which they are known."
"Toonies for Turkeys was an excellent way for public servants to help families in need this holiday season," said Liberal leader Danny Graham. "Hopefully, we will raise even more money next year."
The fundraiser involved the premier, opposition leaders and MLAs collecting toonies and foodstuffs from constituents and others across the province. The foodstuffs and funds raised have been donated to charitable organizations throughout Nova Scotia.
Various organizations also made significant contributions to Toonies for Turkeys. Sobeys Inc., in conjunction with Nestle, donated three freezers to the campaign. The freezers will be given to foodbanks throughout the province. In addition, the Nova Scotia Home Builders' Association donated $3,000 to the campaign.
The Toonies for Turkeys campaign ran from Nov. 1 to Dec. 2.
