Plan Ahead to Get Home Safe
The Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation (NSLC) has announced the fifth annual Plan Ahead to Get Home Safe Program. This program promotes responsible use of beverage alcohol by reminding consumers of their loved ones waiting at home.
An integral part of this program is the Colourful Messages from Someone Special campaign. Students in participating classes create colourful messages with pictures and slogans relating to the responsible use of beverage alcohol. The messages are drawn on brown paper bags supplied by the NSLC and used in retail outlets during the busy holiday season. This year, the decorated bags will be used in NSLC stores on Saturday, Dec. 14.
As sponsor of the campaign, the RCMP provides educational support and information to students in participating schools. During October and November, more than 350 classes decorated paper bags.
"The possible consequences of drinking and driving are introduced and reinforced to the students at an early age, and their interpretations are reflected in their own creative drawings and words," said Beth Martin, program co-ordinator. "It is hoped that the message will continue to be with them as they grow and enter adulthood."
The Plan Ahead to Get Home Safe Program opens the communication channel between students, educators and parents by providing the opportunity to openly discuss substance abuse and responsible decision-making. The topic can easily be integrated into the health or lifestyle curriculum covering personal development and relationships.
In addition to providing a unique educational opportunity, this program offers participating classes a chance to win one of three computers donated by ABM Systems Limited or one of four computer software bundles donated by Microsoft.
