ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT--Growth Strategy Continues to Work for Nova Scotians

The latest employment figures continue to show that Nova Scotia's growth strategy is working, Economic Development Minister Cecil Clarke said today, Dec. 6.

According to figures released today by Statistics Canada, more than 3,000 new jobs were created in the last month in Nova Scotia. Since July 1999, more than 22,000 jobs have been created in the province and four out of every five are full-time.

"Our government's plan to encourage more jobs and growth is clearly working," said Mr. Clarke. "We must continue to build on this success and ensure that all communities and regions share in the benefits of our strategy."

Following extensive consultation with Nova Scotians, the government released Opportunities for Prosperity, the province's first economic growth strategy in close to a decade, in October 2000. Since the strategy's release 15,000 new jobs have been created.

"By working together with the private sector, our government is helping tens of thousands more Nova Scotians get new jobs, earn a decent living and support their families," said the minister.
