Replacement Coming for Canterbury Bridge
TRANSPORTATION/PUBLIC WORKS--Replacement Coming for Canterbury Bridge
The Canterbury Bridge on Bellefontaine Road, Halifax Regional Municipality, will be temporarily replaced with a panel bridge. Ron Russell, Minister of Transportation and Public Works, announced the project today, Nov. 13.
"This is good news for a large number of motorists," said Mr. Russell. "It will help with local traffic until a permanent replacement can be designed and built."
The Canterbury Bridge was closed in early October when an inspection uncovered structural deficiencies.
Motorists are being detoured on Route 207, Trunk 7 and Highway 107, depending on direction of travel.
Canterbury Bridge is a single-lane steel bridge about 23 metres long, with a timber approach at one end.
Design work is under way and the call for tenders to purchase and install the bridge is expected to close in late November or early December.
Contractors will need to work on bridge approaches and then install the structure. The temporary bridge is expected to be in place by February.
