Hiring Process Initiated

The provincial Ombudsman will be hired through a similar process used to appoint Provincial Court judges, Justice Minister Michael Baker announced today, Nov. 1.

"This process is fair, objective and is in keeping with the spirit of the Kaiser agreement, " said Mr. Baker.

An interview committee of up to five members will be established, with representatives from the legal and academic communities, government and lay people. They will provide a list of names of the best qualified people to the Governor-in-Council, who will choose the successful candidate from that list.

The terms of reference for the committee will be based on those used by the Provincial Judicial Appointments Advisory Committee, in consultation with the Speaker of the House of Assembly and the Minister of Justice. The terms of reference will subsequently be posted on the Department of Justice Web site.

"This process mirrors the one used for provincial Judicial appointments, which has been held up as one of the best in the country," said Mr. Baker.

Advertisements for the position are expected to begin running in the government's Employment Opportunities bulletin on Monday.
