TRANSPORTATION/PUBLIC WORKS--Name That Plant Along Provincial Roads, Highways

Sweetfern, bush honeysuckle, bayberry and wild rose are a few of the plants growing along Nova Scotia's roads and highways.

Now, travellers have an enjoyable and easy way to identify vegetation next to provincial roadways. The Pocket Guide to Roadside Plants offers descriptions and photographs of typical plants and flowers in an easy-to-read format.

"We are fortunate in having such a diversity of plants that thrive along our roads and highways," said Ron Russell, Minister of Transportation and Public Works. "This guide can help us all appreciate the natural beauty of our province while we travel the highways."

The field guide was produced by the Department of Transportation and Public Works and Nova Scotia Agricultural College.

It also explains the roadside vegetation policies and the safety and legislative goals that highway maintenance workers follow when maintaining roadside vegetation.

The guide sells for $5 plus HST at visitor information centres in Cape Breton and Amherst, as well as the Museum of Natural History and Carrefour Atlantic Emporium at Historic Properties in Halifax.
