UN Protocol Strengthens Women's Human Rights

Canadian women, as of today, Oct. 18, have one more tool to advance equality, fairness and dignity.

By signing the Optional Protocol to the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), Canada makes it possible for women to take complaints to the UN once all domestic remedies have failed.

"Our participation in this protocol continues the process of securing women's rights, and it's particularly apt that we mark Oct. 18, Persons Day, in this way," said Status of Women Minister Jane Purves. Oct. 18, 1929, was the day the British Privy Council found that Canadian women were qualified persons under the British North America Act, overturning the findings of the Supreme Court of Canada.

"UN decisions aren't legally binding, but a negative decision would have a major impact on Canada as a supporter of the rights of women," said Rita Warner, chair of the Advisory Council on the Status of Women. "We see this as one more step on the continuing journey of women all around the world towards full equality."
