Minister Presents Aquaculture Bursaries at Festival

Guysborough County will be recognized by the provincial Department of Agriculture and Fisheries on Sunday, Oct. 20, for its aquaculture initiatives. Ernest Fage, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, will acknowledge the area's achievements during the 5th annual Aquaculture Harvest Festival in the town of Guysborough.

"The Guysborough industry contributes over $400,000 to the province's $36-million aquaculture sector, and it is important to recognize this commitment and desire to see the industry grow," said Mr. Fage.

Mr. Fage will be on hand to celebrate the event and present $500 bursaries to each of three high schools in Guysborough: Guysborough Academy, St. Mary's Academy and Canso Academy. These bursaries will to be given to students interested in pursuing a career in aquaculture.

"The aquaculture industry is not without its challenges," said Mr. Fage. "The future success of aquaculture will depend largely on the education, skills and interest our young people. This bursary will hopefully assist those students with their studies."

Free seafood samples and local musical entertainment are part of the festival. A live-fish touch-tank and face painting will add to the fun for children.

The festival takes place from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Jost's Wharf Building, on the Guysborough waterfront.

On Monday, Oct. 21, the department's aquaculture staff will spend the day with students from Guysborough Academy to talk about the fish biology, fish health, modern production techniques and career opportunities in aquaculture.
