Scholarship Awarded to NSCAD Student

Laura MacLean, a ceramics student at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax, is this year's recipient of the $6,000 Prince Edward Scholarship.

The scholarship was established by the province to commemorate the visit of Prince Edward to the college in 1987. It is awarded each year to a Nova Scotia student who is entering his or her final year at the college.

"NSCAD graduates give a great deal to Nova Scotia's vibrant cultural community," said Education Minister Jane Purves. "We're pleased to help young Nova Scotians as they refine their skills and prepare to launch their careers in the arts."

Ms. MacLean has actively contributed to the college's ceramics department and has held the position of president of the Ceramics Student League.

"NSCAD has been an enriching, challenging experience and it's just a thrill to receive this award," said Ms. MacLean. "It's wonderful to be recognized as a young artist and very encouraging as I continue toward my goal of becoming part of Nova Scotia's arts community."

Ms. MacLean will graduate from the college in December. She is currently living in Three Fathom Harbour and plans to open a studio on the eastern shore. She has chosen to practise traditional vessel-making with earthenware clay from Lantz, Hants Co.

"Students must invest considerable amounts in order to make works of art of the highest order, so scholarships are vitally important to us," said college president Paul Greenhalgh. "The Prince Edward Scholarship is a wonderful initiative. Laura MacLean, one of our bright young students, will benefit enormously from the generosity of the provincial government."

The college is holding a ceremony this evening, Oct. 16, to present scholarships totalling $132,600 to 125 students.

Information and application forms for the Prince Edward and other scholarships are available through the Office of Student and Academic Services at the college.
