Easy Street Goes Missing; Amnesty Declared

TRANSPORTATION/PUBLIC WORKS--Easy Street Goes Missing; Amnesty Declared

Easy Street has gone missing at least 14 times since 1998. At least, the road sign for Easy Street, Annapolis Co., has gone missing, along with signs for Lover's Lane and Beautiful Cove, Digby Co.

It's a common problem across the province, and the Department of Transportation and Public Works is taking steps to correct it.

Throughout October, all road signs can be returned to department bases and offices, no questions asked.

"I encourage everyone to return road signs, no matter how they ended up being in possession of them," said Ron Russell, Minister of Transportation and Public Works. "It may seem innocent, but the money adds up and it's against the law."

The road sign amnesty program applies to all road signs owned by the department, including stop signs, street name signs and directional signs.

A similar program was undertaken in the Middleton area about eight years ago. One batch of returned signs was worth about $3,000.

Mr. Russell said the theft of road signs costs taxpayers thousands of dollars each year.
