Human Rights Complaint Settled

A complaint of sexual harassment and discrimination on the basis of sex has been settled prior to a scheduled human rights board of inquiry.

Kimberly Sheehan of Halifax had alleged that while she was an employee of Causeway Bay 20 Limited she was subjected to sexual harassment by a fellow employee.

In agreeing to settle the complaint, Causeway Bay 20 Limited has agreed to pay Ms. Sheehan $3,000 in general damages. The employer has not acknowledged any breach of the Human Rights Act, nor accepted liability for Ms. Sheehan's allegations.

In accepting the settlement agreement, Ms. Sheehan has released her former employer from any liability for her allegations.

Boards of inquiry are the final stage in the human rights complaint process. They are independent, public hearings into complaints of discrimination. Settlement of a complaint is still possible between the parties before a scheduled board of inquiry hearing.
