Annual 4-H Show Celebrates 25 Years

More than 2,000 4-H members from across the province are gearing up for the annual Nova Scotia 4-H Show, Sept. 27 to 29, at the Hants County Exhibition Grounds in Windsor. Agriculture and Fisheries minister Ernest Fage invites all Nova Scotians to attend this free family event, celebrating its 25th year.

"The 4-H Show has a 25-year tradition of providing education and entertainment for the whole family," said Mr. Fage. "The 4-H program provides a positive influence in today's youth and this exhibition is an excellent way to display their talents."

The public can expect to see the results of a year's training and work in over 40 subject areas. 4-H members, aged nine to 21, will display their projects in such areas as computers, photography, waterfowl, crafts, dairy calf, foods, floriculture, horse and sewing.

"This show is the highlight of the 4-H year and we usually expect 10,000 visitors," said Elizabeth Crouse, manager of the Nova Scotia 4-H program. "The members and leaders have been planning for this event for months and I expect a truly spectacular show."

Highlights of the weekend event include livestock competitions, a fashion show, floral arranging competition, dog obedience and handling trials, market steer, lamb and turkey auctions and selections for the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto.

Hants County 4-H Council is hosting the 2002 4-H show with assistance from the 4-H councils in Kings and Annapolis counties.

In 2002, the Nova Scotia 4-H program is proudly celebrating 80 years of educating rural youth and strengthening rural communities. Since 1922, 4-H has been in the business of developing well-rounded, responsible citizens -- tomorrow's leaders. In 4-H, young people have opportunities to learn a variety of skills, broaden their interests, meet new people and learn by doing. There are about 2,400 members, 1,000 adult leaders and 100 4-H clubs in Nova Scotia.
