Support for Harbour Cleanup

A cleaner Halifax Harbour is one step closer to reality. Premier John Hamm today announced that the Nova Scotia government will commit $32 million towards the Halifax Harbour Solutions Project.

"Since the spring, we told the people of greater Halifax/Dartmouth that our government would be a part of the solution for Halifax Harbour," said Premier Hamm. "Today, we are keeping our word. Today, we are taking another important step to passing along a cleaner environment to our children."

The provincial government will contribute $30 million in direct support over a 15-year period, starting in fiscal year 2003-04. It will also transfer ownership of two pieces of property valued at $2 million, including an access road to the treatment facility from Pleasant Street.

"Halifax Harbour cleanup is a priority for the people of greater Halifax/Dartmouth. It's a priority for this government," said the premier. "We look forward to securing federal funding on Nova Scotia's infrastructure priorities, here in Dartmouth, Halifax and across Nova Scotia."

Provincial support for cleaning up Halifax Harbour is another government commitment that is being met, said Angus MacIsaac, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations.

"Over the past year the Nova Scotia government has been helping communities across the province find solutions to their sewage treatment problems, just as we promised three years ago," said Mr. MacIsaac. "From Annapolis Royal to Sydney, from Amherst to Lunenburg, the province has helped two dozen communities provide a safer and cleaner environment for their residents and all Nova Scotians."
